The 4 Main Grapple Types — Which One for Your Job?

1. Rotating Log Grapple — The Forestry Workhorse

The most versatile grapple type for forestry and log handling. A 360° continuous-rotation motor lets the operator grab, rotate, and position logs at any angle without repositioning the excavator. Key advantage: one machine can load, stack, and sort — no second piece of equipment needed.

Key specs to check:
  • Opening width: 800-2200mm — must exceed your largest log diameter by at least 20%
  • Clamp force: 2-15 tons — determines grip on wet or irregular logs
  • Rotation motor displacement: typically 50-150cc/rev — higher = slower but more torque for heavy loads
  • Material: Hardox 400/450 wear plate on contact surfaces, Grade 80 structural frame
  • Hydraulic flow: 20-80 L/min for rotation circuit (separate from clamp circuit on twin-line setups)

2. Orange Peel Grab — The Bulk Material Specialist

Four or five curved tines that close like a flower — designed for loose, irregular bulk materials that a standard grapple cannot hold. Scrap metal processors, demolition contractors, and recycling yards use these daily.

Key specs to check:
  • Tine count: 4-tine (general purpose) or 5-tine (dense materials, better grip on small pieces)
  • Capacity: 0.3-2.0 cubic meters — measured open, suitable for your carrier's lift capacity
  • Dead weight: 500-5,000 kg — subtract from your machine's lift capacity to calculate net payload
  • Shell material: Hardox 450 or equivalent — scrap metal is extremely abrasive
  • Rotation: Motorized (hydraulic motor + slewing ring) adds 100-300 kg but gives full positioning control

3. Fixed / Stationary Grapple — Simplicity and Strength

No rotation mechanism means fewer moving parts, less maintenance, and lower cost. Mounted on a grab machine or pedestal crane, these handle scrap, waste, and bulk material at recycling stations and ports. The trade-off: you must position the carrier precisely for every grab — no rotation to correct angle.

4. Hydraulic Thumb — The Budget Material Handler

A thumb is not a standalone grapple — it works with a bucket or blade as the opposing jaw. The simplest, cheapest way to add gripping to any excavator. Bolt-on or weld-on installation. Ideal for small contractors who occasionally need to handle rocks, logs, or demolition debris but cannot justify a dedicated grapple.

Rotation vs Fixed: The Real-World Trade-off

✅ Rotating

  • Grab from any angle — no repositioning
  • Stack and sort logs in one pass
  • Work on slopes without carrier rotation
  • Hydraulic motor adds weight and cost

⚠️ Fixed

  • Lighter — more payload capacity
  • Lower cost — simpler hydraulics
  • Less maintenance — no slew ring or motor
  • Must reposition carrier for every grab
