How to choose the right hydraulic breaker hammer for your excavator — carrier matching, flow calculations, chisel selection, and maintenance. Written for contractors by a manufacturer.

The 4 Factors That Determine Breaker Fit

Matching a breaker to an excavator is not guesswork. Get any of these four wrong and you either destroy the breaker, wreck your boom, or burn fuel for no output. Every contractor should know these before buying.

Carrier Weight Match

Breaker weight = 7%–12% of excavator weight. A 20-ton excavator needs a 1.4–2.4 ton breaker. Too light = no impact energy. Too heavy = structural cracks and boom failure.

Hydraulic Flow & Pressure

Check auxiliary flow (L/min or GPM) and relief pressure (bar/PSI). A breaker starved of flow hits weak. Excess flow overheats seals and cracks pistons.

Mounting Interface

Pin-on, top-type bracket, side-type bracket, or quick coupler. The mounting must match your stick geometry — pin diameter, center distance, and ear width.

Application Type

Concrete demolition? Rock quarrying? Trenching? Underwater? Different jobs demand different breaker designs — top-type, side-type, box-type, or fully enclosed silent models.

Chisel Selection: 5 Types and When to Use Each

Moil Point

Conical tip. Best for hard rock and reinforced concrete. Concentrates energy on a single point. Most common general-purpose chisel.

Flat Chisel / Wedge

Wide flat edge. For secondary breaking, slab concrete, and softer materials. Spreads impact over a wider area.

Blunt Tool

Rounded blunt tip. Boulder breaking, oversize reduction. Transfers impact without penetrating — fractures by shockwave.

Cross Chisel

4-way wedge tip. Heavy demolition of thick concrete and large rock. 4 directional wedges for efficient fracturing.

Asphalt Cutter

Wide flat blade. Road and asphalt cutting. Clean edge for patch repairs. Not for rock or concrete.

Maintenance: 5 Things That Kill a Breaker Early

  1. Dry firing without greasing — Chisel must be greased every 2 hours of operation. Dry running destroys the bushing and piston within days.
  2. Operating at wrong pressure — Too low = no impact. Too high = seal blowout, piston cracks, nitrogen chamber failure. Always set relief valve per spec.
  3. Using the wrong chisel for the material — Moil point on soft asphalt = wasted energy. Asphalt cutter on granite = destroyed chisel in one shift.
  4. Applying down-pressure with the boom — The breaker should float on the material under its own weight. Crowding with boom force bends chisels and cracks housings.
  5. Ignoring nitrogen pressure — Low nitrogen = no impact force, the breaker just vibrates. Check nitrogen every 100 hours with a charging kit.
